More adults and teenagers in the Sutherland Shire are asking about straightening their teeth. At Comfort Dental Gymea we offer Invisalign and Angel Aligner clear aligners, as well as braces. Each has strengths, and the right choice depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and your goals. This guide compares them in plain English.

Why straighten your teeth?

Straighter teeth can be easier to clean, which may lower the risk of decay and gum disease. Correcting a bite can also reduce uneven wear on your teeth. For many people, the change in how they feel about their smile matters just as much.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable plastic trays made from digital scans of your teeth. Each set moves your teeth a small, planned amount. You change to a new set every week or two, and attend regular check-ins so we can monitor progress.

Invisalign

A widely used clear aligner system that uses digital planning to map each stage of tooth movement. It can treat a range of crowding, spacing and bite issues.

Angel Aligner

Another clear aligner system that also uses digital scans and staged trays. Your dentist will recommend the system that best suits your case, your goals and your budget.

How do braces work?

Braces use brackets bonded to your teeth and a wire that applies gentle, continuous pressure. They're adjusted at regular appointments. Because they're fixed in place, they work around the clock without you needing to remember to wear them.

Clear aligners vs braces at a glance

  • Appearance: aligners are nearly invisible; braces are more noticeable, though tooth-coloured options exist.

  • Wear time: aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day; braces are always working.

  • Eating: aligners come out for meals, so there are no food restrictions; braces mean avoiding hard and sticky foods.

  • Cleaning: aligners make brushing and flossing easier; braces take more effort to clean around.

  • Complex cases: braces can be more predictable for some complex movements.

  • Discipline: aligners rely on you wearing them as directed.

Who are clear aligners best for?

Clear aligners often suit adults and older teenagers with mild to moderate crowding, gaps or bite issues, who are motivated to wear them consistently. They're popular with people who'd prefer a discreet option for work or social life.

When might braces be the better choice?

Braces can be the better option for more complex tooth movements, some bite corrections, or for younger patients who may find it hard to wear aligners for enough hours each day.

What are the risks?

All orthodontic treatment carries some risks. Teeth often feel tender for a day or two after a new aligner or adjustment. Poor cleaning during treatment can lead to decay or gum inflammation. Teeth can move back after treatment if retainers aren't worn as advised. We'll check your teeth and gums before starting and treat any decay or gum disease first.

What happens after treatment?

Retainers are an essential part of treatment. Teeth naturally want to drift, so you'll wear a removable retainer, have a fixed retainer bonded behind your teeth, or both.

Summary

Clear aligners and braces can both give excellent results. Aligners offer discretion and flexibility; braces can be more predictable for complex cases. The best way to decide is a consultation where we examine your teeth and talk through options, timeframes, costs and risks.

Teeth straightening FAQs

How long does treatment take?

It varies with how much your teeth need to move. Some cases take a few months; more complex cases can take longer. We'll give you an estimate after your assessment.

Do clear aligners hurt?

Most people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two with each new set, which settles quickly.

Can adults have braces or aligners?

Yes. There's no upper age limit, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy.

How do I get started?
