Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Treatment in Gymea
Snoring is more than a nuisance for your partner. It can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), where your airway repeatedly closes during sleep. Untreated OSA is linked to daytime tiredness, high blood pressure and heart disease.
For many people, a custom-made mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is a comfortable alternative to a CPAP machine.
How a sleep splint works
The splint looks like a two-piece sports mouthguard. It holds your lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep, which keeps your airway open and reduces snoring and breathing pauses.
Signs you may benefit
-
Loud, regular snoring
-
Your partner notices you stop breathing or gasp during sleep
-
Waking up tired, or with headaches or a dry mouth
-
Feeling sleepy during the day or while driving
-
You've been diagnosed with OSA but can't tolerate CPAP
Your treatment, step by step
-
Assessment. We check your teeth, jaw joints and airway, and ask about your sleep.
-
Diagnosis. Sleep apnoea must be diagnosed with a sleep study. We can refer you to a sleep physician or GP if you haven't had one.
-
Custom fitting. We take a scan or impressions, and your splint is made to fit your mouth.
-
Adjustment and review. We fine-tune the position over a few weeks. A follow-up sleep study confirms it's working.
FAQs
Can I buy a snoring mouthguard from the chemist instead?
Over-the-counter devices don't fit well and can strain your jaw. A custom splint is adjustable, more comfortable and lasts years.
Is a sleep splint covered by health funds?
Many extras policies include some cover for oral appliances. We'll give you item numbers so you can check with your fund.
Will it change my bite?
Some people notice minor bite changes over time. We monitor this at your regular check-ups.
