How Long Does Professional Teeth Whitening Last? Making Your Results Go Further
Written by Dr Raj, Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours (University of Queensland), Comfort Dental Gymea
Professional teeth whitening can noticeably brighten your smile, but it isn't permanent. How long your results last depends on the type of staining, the whitening method and your daily habits. Here's what to expect, and how to keep your smile looking its best for longer.
How long do whitening results usually last?
For many people, results from professional whitening last from several months to a couple of years. Teeth gradually pick up new stains from food, drinks and everyday wear, so most people choose an occasional top-up to maintain their shade.
Why results fade
Whitening works by breaking down stain molecules inside the tooth. It doesn't stop new stains forming. Coffee, tea, red wine, curries and smoking all add colour back over time. Natural ageing also makes enamel thinner, so the yellower layer beneath (dentine) shows through more.
Why results differ between people
Some teeth respond quickly and hold their shade well; others are more stubborn. Yellow-brown staining usually whitens well, while grey staining from medication or a tooth that has had trauma may respond less predictably.
In-chair vs take-home whitening
In-chair whitening
Done at the clinic in a single appointment, using a stronger whitening gel while your gums are protected. It gives a noticeable change in one visit and suits people who want quicker results.
Take-home whitening
We make custom trays from scans or impressions of your teeth, and you wear them with a professional gel at home for a set time each day over one to two weeks. Take-home kits are also handy for top-ups later.
What about supermarket products?
Over-the-counter products contain lower concentrations of whitening agents and don't come with custom trays, so results are usually more modest. Whitening toothpastes mainly remove surface stains rather than changing the tooth's underlying colour.

What affects how long your whitening lasts?
Diet and drinks: coffee, tea, cola, red wine, berries and soy sauce stain teeth.
Smoking and vaping: nicotine and tar cause yellow-brown stains.
Oral hygiene: plaque and tartar pick up stain easily.
Your natural tooth colour and enamel thickness.
Existing dental work: fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding don't change colour with whitening.
Does whitening work on crowns, veneers and fillings?
No. Whitening only changes natural tooth structure. If you have visible fillings, crowns or veneers at the front, they may look darker than your newly whitened teeth. We'll check this before you start, and talk through options to keep your smile even.
How to make your whitening last longer
Avoid strongly coloured food and drinks for 48 hours after whitening, while teeth are most absorbent.
Drink coffee or tea through a straw, or rinse with water afterwards.
Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily.
Keep up six-monthly professional cleans to remove surface stain.
Use your take-home trays for occasional top-ups as advised by your dentist.
Is whitening safe?
Professional whitening is generally safe when supervised by a dentist. The most common side effects are temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, which usually settle within a few days. Whitening isn't suitable for everyone, for example during pregnancy or if you have untreated decay or gum disease, so we'll check your mouth first.
Summary
Professional whitening can last from months to a couple of years, depending on your habits and the method used. A check-up beforehand, sensible aftercare and occasional top-ups will help you get the most from your results. Learn more about teeth whitening in Gymea or our veneers.

Teeth whitening FAQs
Is teeth whitening permanent?
No. Results fade gradually as new stains form, but they can be maintained with good habits and top-ups.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people notice temporary sensitivity. It usually settles within a few days, and we can suggest products to help.
How often can I whiten my teeth?
Your dentist will advise a safe schedule for top-ups. Overusing whitening products can increase sensitivity.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have fillings at the front?
You can, but the fillings won't change colour. We may suggest replacing them afterwards to match your new shade. Book a consultation to talk it through, or call (02) 9524 7646.
